We Should Do This Again Sometime

We should do this again sometime.
Not just a get down
get down
get deeper and down
Saturday night,
but this minute, tuneless thing
where we listen to the words
the meanings
the soul
coming from your lips,
hanging in the air—
asking the same question
that street light out there
is posing to the night sky:
Will you accept my presence?
Will my words stroke a heartbeat
of recognition within your life?

We should do this again sometime.
You bring the words and a lighter,
I’ll bring the harmony
and a distain for IPA,
and we’ll forget about what
could have happened—
who walked out
and who stayed,
the pieces forming a jagged
mural of lives and times and faces
we only manage to conjure up
thanks to the hops and tobacco fumes.

We should do this again sometime,
because, really, where else would
we rather be.
